The 6 Most Common Traps in Game Account Scams

As game account and digital product trading grows, scammers keep refining their methods. Interestingly, though, most of the tactics have stayed the same for years: only the stories and platforms change. In this article we cover the six most common traps that buyers and sellers face, how they work and how to protect yourself from each.

1. The "Pay First, Get the Account Later" Trap

How it works: The seller offers a very attractive price below market and asks for payment directly via bank transfer, crypto or gift cards. Sometimes, to gain trust, they say "half now, half on delivery". After payment, they either vanish entirely or ask for more money, saying "there was a problem, you need to send a bit more".

Protection: A genuine, trustworthy seller has no reason to refuse a protected payment system. Always pay through a system where the money waits on the platform until the product is delivered and confirmed. If the seller insists on off-site payment, that alone is reason enough to end the deal.

2. Fake Screenshots and Borrowed Accounts

How it works: Screenshots showing rank, inventory or account level can easily be edited. Some scammers use real images taken from someone else's account; the images are genuine but the account being sold is not that one.

Protection: Ask the seller for a short video or live screen share showing the username or in-game ID. If possible, verify the account yourself on the game's official stats sites. When you receive it, first check that everything promised in the listing is actually there.

3. Taking the Account Back After the Sale

How it works: This is one of the sneakiest methods. The seller really delivers the account and takes the payment; days or weeks later they contact the game company's support claiming "my account was stolen". As the original owner, they have proof such as the sign-up email and first purchase records, and the account is returned to them.

Protection:

  • Require the email linked to the account to be transferred to you; change the email and password as soon as you receive it and enable two-step verification.
  • Ask whether the seller created the account and how many times it has changed hands.
  • Prefer verified sellers with high ratings and a long sales history.
  • Keep messages and payment records on the platform; if the account is pulled back, these records are your evidence in the support process.

4. Fake Middlemen and Copycat Sites

How it works: Especially in deals on Discord and social media, the scammer says "let's use a middleman to be safe" and introduces a friend or their own second account as a neutral middleman. In another variation, they send a link to a fake site copying a well-known platform's name and design; the payment goes to that fake site.

Protection: Use escrow only through the official platform's own system. OyunTicareti's Escrow service is started from within the site; anyone who sends you a private link saying "pay here" is not the official escrow. Before paying, check the domain in the address bar letter by letter.

5. Fake "System Messages" and Support Impersonation

How it works: The scammer sends text in a chat that looks like an official platform notice: "Your payment is confirmed, deliver the product", "Your account is suspended, click this link to verify" or "Support team: verify your card to complete the transaction". The seller is tricked into delivering as if paid, or the buyer's login details are stolen.

Protection: Real payment and order status appear only on the order page in your account; no text typed by users in a chat is an official notice. Platform staff never ask for your password, verification code or card details. OyunTicareti automatically scans messages for such fake system messages and holds suspicious content for review; still, always do the final check yourself on the order page.

6. Fake Receipts and Chargebacks (Targeting Sellers)

How it works: This trap targets sellers. The buyer claims to have made a bank transfer off-site and sends an edited bank receipt. If the seller delivers before seeing the money in their account, they lose. With card payments, the buyer receives the product and then disputes the charge with their bank, saying "I didn't make this purchase" (chargeback).

Protection: A receipt image is not proof of payment; only the platform's order status counts. Do not accept off-site payments. In a protected system the payment first comes to the platform and reaches your account after you deliver; in cases like chargebacks, on-site messages and delivery records serve as evidence in your favour.

Warning Signs: Quick List

  • A price far below market.
  • Being invited to WhatsApp, Telegram or Discord.
  • "There's another buyer, decide now" pressure.
  • Refusing protected payment or making excuses.
  • Asking for passwords, verification codes or card details.
  • Links with misspelled or strange domains.

If You Think You Have Been Scammed

  1. Stop the transaction immediately and do not send any more money.
  2. Take screenshots of all messages, payment records and usernames.
  3. If the transaction happened on-site, contact support and report the user.
  4. If you shared account details, change the passwords of all related accounts.
  5. For large losses, do not hesitate to contact your bank and the authorities.

The strongest protection against scams is keeping the transaction on a single protected platform from start to finish. For a more detailed checklist, see our article on the 10 golden rules for buying a game account.
